At the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Thursday, I zipped myself into this oh-so-comfortable anti-dust outfit, known in the field as a “bunny suit.”

Why?

Because I was in the area to interview scientists and engineers both at NIST’s NanoFab lab in Gaithersburg, Maryland and at the Army’s Night Vision and Electronic Sensor Directorate in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

The trip proved to be enlightening. Partisans have saturated the modern political dialogue with rhetoric about government waste. While such waste may exist, I saw none of it over the past five days.

I’ll have more from both visits over the coming week. Right now, I need to catch up on mundane work that fell by the wayside in my time away.
